Muhammad Zamir

Muhammad Zamir, a former career diplomat, has worked as Ambassador in various countries in Europe- Italy, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belgium, Luzemburg and Switzerland. He has also been Head of the Political Division of the Organization of the Islamic Conference Secretariat, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, FAO, the World Food Programme, International Fund for Agricultural Development and the European Communities. During his Association with diplomacy for nearly thirty-four years, he served in diplomatic assignments in Beirut, Cairo, Tehran, Tripoli, Ottawa, Bangkok, London, Jeddah, Rome and Brussels.

He has been Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dhaka and Chief Information Commissioner of the Information Commission of Bangladesh with the rank and status of Minister of State.

Since September 2012 hye has been Member of the Advisory Council of the President of Bangladesh Awami League and earlier, from July 2012, Member, Independent Appeals Panel, Asian Development Bank, Manila, Philippines. He is also the President of the Bangladesh Folklore Research Centre, Dhaka, Alternate President of the Bangladesh Institute for Law and Internal Affairs, Dhaka, Chairman, Bangladesh Renewable Energy Society, Dhaka, the vice President of the Centre for Democracy6, Dhaka and Vice President, Bangladesh Water partnership, Dhaka, He also practices law as an Advocate in the Chamber of Dr. M Zahir and Associates, Dhaka.

Educated in Dhaka where he specialized literature and law, he also studied Arabic and International Relations as the British Middle East Center for Arabic Studies in Shemian, Lebanon, International Humanitarian Law in Geneva. Switzerland and Peace and Security Studies in Uppsala, Sweden.

He has published sixteen books dealing with Human Rights and International Law, Islamic theology, Adages in Bengali, Contemporary international issues and subjects of importance to Bangladesh and South Asia. He has also published three books of poetry.

He contributes op-ed columns both in Bangladesh and abroad in several newspapers- both in English and Bengali and also in web pages where they have been referred to or reprinted-

He Addressed the Helsinki Committee in the German Parliament at Bonn on the invitation of the speaker of the German Parliament on Peace and Understanding between Europe and Muslim Countries’ in 1994 and also the European Parliament is Strasbourg, France in May, 2001 on the invitation of the President of the European Parliamentary Group on South Asia on the importance of confidence building in South Asia.

He is a resource person for- the National Defence College, the Judicial Affairs Training Institute, the Central Public Service Commission, the Foreign Affairs Training Institute, the Planning Academy, the Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority and electronic media institutions like ATN Bangla and ATN News TV, the NTV, Channel-I TV, the BTV, Gazi TV, Jamuna TV, Bangla Vision TV, SA TV, MY YV, RTV, Mohona TV, Desh TV, and the Ekushey TV.

He is also a part-time in one private university in Dhaka-where he teaches students of masters class- Media, Law and ethics and media and Politics in the International Context.

He is a life Member of the Bangla Academy, Dhaka and the Dhaka Club.
