Mohammad A Arafat

Mohammad A. Arafat is an academic, researcher and analyst. He is currently serving as a faculty member in the Independent University Bangladesh, Executive Chairman of Analytika Research and Executive Director of Shuchinta Foundation. He has also previously worked for the College of Business, Prairie View A&M University in Texas, USA.

Mr. Arafat holds a Master of Business Administration from the USA. As a postgraduate student, he received the Outstanding Graduate Student Award 2004 in Prairie View A&M University for his scholastic achievements. He has also attained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Oklahoma State University.

Following his return to Bangladesh in 2005, Arafat has been playing an instrumental role in promoting the ideology, spirit and values of the Liberation War which is a secular and progressive Bangladesh. In particular, he has been a proactive campaigner for the War Crimes Trial. He served as a Central Committee Member of the Committee for Resisting the Killers and Collaborators of 1971 a leading civil society group campaigning for the trial of war criminals responsible for crimes against humanity in 1971. As the Executive Director of Shuchinta Foundation, Arafat led a nationwide advocacy campaign to mobilize support for the trial amongst the young generation. Moreover, he has organized a series of seminars in private universities to raise awareness in favor of war crime trial and about the Spirit of 1971.

Arafat has represented Bangladesh in many international conferences, seminars and workshops. He has participated in the Bangladesh-India Dialogue on Cooperative Development, Peace and Security in Dhaka 2011 and Chandigarh in 2012 to strengthen bilateral ties. He has presented papers in various local and international forums, including the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies and Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development in India as well as Dhaka School of Economics and Bangladesh Institute of Law & International Affairs in Bangladesh.

As the Executive Chairman of Analytica Research, he has carried out applied research in pharmaceutical agriculture, health, media and consumer products. This includes a joint research project with the International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) and John Hopkins. Moreover, he has served as a resource person for the Asian Development Bank, World Health Organization, International Finance Corporation, United Nations Development Program and Board of Investment. He has also convened various public seminars on key issues, including power sector, regional connectivity, electoral reforms and justice for war crimes.

As a leading public commentator on current affairs in the print and electronic media, Arafat is a well-known political analyst at home and abroad. He writes columns in newspapers and appears frequently in television talk shows. In his media appearance, Arafat had continued to steadfastly advance the cause of the Liberation War and War Crimes Trial. In 2012, he received the Youth League (Youth wing of ruling Awami League) Liberation Day Award from the Awami League President and Prime Minister for his academic and research contributions. He has also published in local and international academic journals.
